ButylMAT Car Sound Deadening - Recommendations For How To Insulate Your Car With ButylMAT & Other Insulation Products

After working on insulating cars with automotive manufacturers for decades, I thought now would be a good time to bring our automotive insulation past to the insulation market.  There's no secret that premium automotive manufacturers spend £thousands on developing acoustic packs for their vehicles.  Countless hours acoustically testing products and then evaluating the acoustic performance within the vehicle, let alone the quantity of road tests required to certify a product safe for fitment and approve the comfort levels from the acoustic pack that has been designed.

Several microphones and hours of analysis later and the acoustic pack is approved for fitment.

Why Would I Add To An Existing Acoustic Pack With After Market Acoustic Products?

The acoustic packs that are designed consider many factors including weight and cost.  If you are more attracted to performance of the car acoustic package, you may decide to "beef up" the acoustic package by using various car insulation and car sound deadening products.  In this blog or forum we intend to offer you free advice from experts on which products suit which automotive application and why.

Car Sound Proofing

From foams to more technical fibres like 3M Thinsulate, these are all beneficial to the overall acoustic performance of a car or vehicle.  My personal favorite is 3M Thinsulate because it is compressible, hydrophobic, meaning it will not absorb water and offers excellent performance for its weight and thickness.  These are referred to as car soundproofing products or acoustic absorbers.  They need to be present inside a cavity usually to add benefit as they will absorb the soundwaves and provide a more refined driving experience.
For example if you remove your door panels with the window up you can usually insulate your outer door panels with ButylMAT (also waterproof) and still have space for 3M Thinsulate.  The ButylMAT will deaden the panels and act as a noise barrier and the 3M Thinsulate will absorb the noise which is bouncing around in the cavity providing a non reflective surface for soundwaves.
Here are the two products below:

This fitment option can also apply when you are insulating your outer wheel arches and inner wheel arches. The ButylMAT will act as a barrier and the 3M Thinsulate will absorb the remaining noise which manages to trasfer through the cavities.
You can also insulate your roof with this combination to reduce rain noise and traffic noise higher within the vehicle, this usually requires the removal of the headliner.

Car Floor Insulation

When insulating your floor it is important to realise that as carpets are usually one of the first automotive components fitted, you may have to remove most of the interior trim to carry out this task.  This area of the post is mainly aimed at insulating a full classic car restoration project. As classic cars are usually poorly insulated with materials which are commonly obsolete because of poor performance, we combine traditional insulation types with newer higher performance acoustic insulation products with our VBLAM23 and VBLAM33.  These products weigh either 5.4Kg/m2 or 5.6Kg/m2, they act as an acoustic absorber and a sound barrier layer in one product. They can take the repetitive wear of footprints and really make the difference acoustically. It is possible to fit one of these laminate car insulation products across the whole floor and up onto the dash area (with adhesive).  This is very similar to the products which premium OEM's utilised on their new refined vehicles within the floor and dash application.
